PREDICT: Can New York Islanders and Ilya Sorokin DEFY Expectations? Matthew Schaefer IMPACT DebatedThe

The New York Islanders face a crossroads as Ilya Sorokin’s elite goaltending and Calder winner Matthew Schaefer offer hope—but are they destined to stay stuck in the Metro Division’s mushy middle? Jay Foster and Gil Martin break down why the Islanders’ aging roster, lack of top-line forwards, and cap constraints keep them teetering between playoff contender and lottery team.

Key topics include General Manager Mathieu Darche’s plan to unlock $40.6 million in cap space, the developmental outlook for prospects like Cal Ritchie and Victor Eklund, and what Peter DeBoer’s new defensive structure means for Sorokin’s workload. The hosts debate whether Schaefer’s rapid ascent delays a full rebuild and what realistic expectations look like for 2026-27. Can the Islanders retool on the fly, or will another frustrating season force their hand? Get the inside track on potential roster moves and why this could be a make-or-break year at UBS Arena.

All this and more on today's Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin and guest Jay Forster.
