RECKONING: Matthew Schaefer and Ilya Sorokin CARRY Islanders in The Athletic’s Top 150 Reveal

The New York Islanders place four players in The Athletic’s NHL Top 150—but is it enough for a playoff breakthrough? Gil Martin breaks down Matthew Schaefer’s rapid rise, Ilya Sorokin’s crucial role, and how Peter DeBoer’s focus on defensive structure could be the key to unlocking the Islanders’ next era. He explores the projections and critiques of both Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat, spotlighting concerns over elite firepower and the urgent need for reliable backup goaltending with Semyon Varlamov a question mark.

Key topics include Victor Eklund’s odds of cracking the roster, the team’s evolving prospect pipeline, and how GM Mathieu Darche’s moves could change the course from mediocrity to contention. Plus, a rare playoff trivia nugget: the only Islander to play a postseason game without ever appearing in the regular season. Can the New York Islanders maximize their top-end talent, or will roster gaps hold them back?
